Information update on FortisBC gas outage

Lake Country, B.C. - The Central Okanagan Emergency Management (COEM) has been in close contact with FortisBC as they continue to work towards restoration of natural gas service to the communities of Lake Country, Kelowna and the Okanagan Indian Band (Duck Lake IR7).

Restoration of gas services is a multi-step process and involves visiting every property twice, first to turn off gas at each meter and again to relight each customer’s appliances once the gas system is back in operation. FortisBC has close to 60 crew members on the ground in the area supporting this effort, including crews from across the province.

Residents can support the restoration efforts and help avoid delays by ensuring crews have clear access to gas meters.

A warming centre remains open until further notice at the Oyama Community Club,15710 Oyama Road, to provide temporary comfort for those affected by the outage.

For the safety of residents impacted by the outage, do not use outdoor equipment inside to heat your home. It can cause carbon monoxide poisoning or fire. Never use:
•    BBQs or propane grills
•    Camping stoves
•    Patio heaters
•    Generators
•    Charcoal or fuel burning devices

Only use appliances approved for indoor use. Visit Health Canada – Carbon Monoxide Safety.

Residents are encouraged to continue following FortisBC's Service Alert website for latest updates on service restoration.
